Double loft bed ‘Carlos’: it is really possible with our DIY woodworking plans!
This loft bed is made entirely of sheet material and standard spruce beams. In fact, you create a space within a space. Handy if you want to make optimal use of a small home. The double bed is largely out of sight and underneath you create a cozy corner to sit, read a book or watch TV. The stairs to the bed are formed by a stable cupboard with lots of storage space. The compartment cupboard is open on two sides so that the whole remains light and airy.
Because the furniture stands completely on its own, you can place it freely in the room. It is therefore also suitable for creating cozy corners in a large space.
You can actually build this loft bed in any kind of sheet material. Underlayment would be a good choice as it is relatively inexpensive and has a warm, cozy ‘log cabin’ feel. MDF is a good choice if you want to paint or spray the furniture in an opaque color. MDF is also relatively cheap.
We recommend the use of a panel saw / circular saw to cut the panels. You can also have this done by your wood supplier. To get an idea about the availability and costs of sheet material, sawing, and delivery, take a look at our furniture maker tip ‘Buy sheet material.’
In this design we have tried to combine the warm atmosphere of wood and a log cabin / garden house with a sleek, modern design. The starting point was to create a separate space that makes optimum use of the available space.
In this high sleeper, we have taken into account a number of specific things:
We pay a lot of attention to keeping screw joints out of sight as much as possible. Although almost all connections are screwed, few screws are visible. Actually only some of the beam construction. Van de hele vakkenkast/trap is geen schroef in het zicht.
We also describe how you can make connections with dowels in some places, so that you do not need any screws at all. If you want to paint the furniture in an opaque color, it is sufficient to neatly conceal screw connections with the help of filler. Our furniture makers’ tips describe how to do this.
Efficient and stable
Then we always try to get the furniture from standard size sheet material as efficiently as possible. There are 10 plates in this piece of furniture, but they are mainly in the walls and ceiling / bed base (6 pieces). Of course, there is also some material in the substantial modern compartment cupboard. The cabinet is doubled for appearance and strength.
You can do it too!
Finally, the design is tailored to the possibilities and limitations of the DIY and his/her tools. If you have a handsaw (sometimes jigsaw) and drill and can handle it, you can make all our furniture, so to speak. If you have professional tools, it will only get easier.
As you may have seen from the photos of made furniture, it is very easy to make changes to the dimensions and/or design yourself. The clear cutting list and construction drawings give you the self-confidence to do that. This piece of furniture is designed for a room of approximately 280 cm high. This allows you to sit comfortably on and under the bed. If you have more space in height, you can make the bed higher.
The working drawing package/construction drawing
The template package consists of a beautifully designed PDF brochure in A4 format. At the start, you will find the list of necessities such as the wood (sheet material) and screws (size and number), glue, and any other parts. It also states which tools you need, and a cutting list with the dimensions of the parts of the furniture to be cut. Larger pieces of furniture also all have a sawing plan: drawings on how to cut the panels from a sheet as optimally as possible.
Each furniture design drawing contains several applicable furniture maker tips about the choice of materials, sawing, screws, gluing, sanding and lacquering, etc. When doweling is mentioned as an alternative, an explanation is also included, enough to get started with self-confidence.
Finally, a step-by-step plan follows the manual for the assembly of the furniture, with clear drawings and clear explanations.
