Furniture plan: DIY dresser Leon
Elegant, graceful dresser/chest of drawers with nice tapered legs. Four large drawers, so even if you stop using it as a changing table, you still keep a nice chest of drawers, useful for older children. Some people have, with the aid of the building plan, made variants with raised edges or an additional central compartment. In the construction plan two variants are described: one with wooden runners for the drawers, and one with metal drawer slides. Choosing metal drawer guides has the advantage that your drawers run very smoothly, and you can open them fully without having to worry that they fall out. But also with wooden gliders the drawers run smoothly (see our tips how).
The furniture items in the children’s series Leon are characterized by tapered legs; these actually form angles on which the furniture is “suspended”. We further take into account a number of specific issues in the design of the nursery dresser. We pay much attention to keeping screws out of sight. We also describe how to make any connections with dowels in some places, so that you do not need screws at all. If you want to paint the furniture in an opaque color, you can hide any screws using some filler. Our woodworking tips describe how to do this.
We always try to make our furniture as efficiently as possible from standard size sheet or board material. Dresser Leon can be made completely from MDF sheet material.
The design takes account of the capabilities and limitations of a typical DIY’er and their tools. If you have a hand saw (and in some cases a jigsaw) and a drill and know how to handle them, then you should be able to make all of our furniture. If you have access to professional tools, then of course it will be even easier.
As you might have already seen in the photos of clients who built this chest of drawers, it’s really easy to make changes to the dimensions and/or design, and many have done so. The clear cutting list and design drawings help to give you the confidence to make any changes you like.
The manual / design plan and drawings
The downloadable manual is in the form of an A4 booklet for you to print out yourself. At the start you’ll find a list of necessities, such as the wood (board or sheet material), screws (size and quantity), glue and any other parts. Also listed are the tools that you will need and a cutting list with dimensions of all the parts that make up the piece of furniture.
Each furniture plan contains a number of relevant tips about the choice of material, sawing, screws, glue, sanding, painting, varnishing, etc. When dowels are given as an alternative, there is also a detailed explanation so that you can get started with full confidence.
